I got my first Pembroke Welsh Corgi in 1968 while I was still in high school. I thought the only worthy successor would be a "show dog." I got him in 1982 and he went on to be a CH UDT in spite of both of us.  We got that first TD (Tracking Dog) title in 1985 and I have trained dogs to 12 more TD titles in the years since.

My second show dog earned both her TD and TDX (Tracking Dog Excellent) on her first tests, and her grandson Cruiser did the same and at the same sites. He earned his VST (Variable Surface Tracking) and CT (Champion Tracker) titles in 1997, becoming the first of his breed to do so, as well as being the first breed champion of any breed to be a CT. Cruiser left me in early December, at just under the age of 16 and a half, but he taught me a lot about hard surface tracking. Video of Cruiser at Nationals at age 16. I've earned 4 TDXs and am currently training two more for that title.

I became an AKC tracking judge in 2001 and am approved to judge all three tests.  I show in conformation, tracking, obedience, herding, and agility. Last time I counted, my dogs had earned over sixty AKC titles in the 26 years that I have been showing.  I have bred only a handful of litters in that time, but each litter has had pups that went on to titles of one sort or another. I currently have 6 Pembrokes, five of whom are breed champions and the sixth has a major by virtue of going Winners Bitch (and Best Puppy) at last year's Atlanta specialty. Each dog is actively training in one or more activities. I am the Performance Events chairman for my parent club and I write the Pembroke column for the AKC Gazette. In my non-doggy life, I teach high school mathematics and will be retiring from that at the end of this school year.  My favorite dog activity is tracking. You get a working relationship with your dog unlike any other in any other dog activity. Ultimately, your dogs will be your best instructors. Thank you for inviting me to your club meeting to talk about my favorite sport.
